How to use the hourly to salary calculator
- Hourly to salary: enter your hourly pay, hours per week and weeks you're paid each year. Add overtime if you work it regularly.
- Salary to hourly: enter a yearly salary to see what it's worth per hour.
- Use 52 weeks if you get paid holiday, as most employees do. Use fewer weeks if you're paid only for the weeks you work.
Formulas
Yearly pay = Hourly rate × Hours per week × Weeks paid per year
Hourly rate = Yearly salary ÷ (Hours per week × Weeks paid per year)
Monthly pay is the yearly figure divided by 12, not weekly pay × 4, because most months are longer than four weeks.
Worked examples
25 an hour, 40 hours a week, 52 weeks: 25 × 40 × 52 = 52,000 a year, or 4,333.33 a month, 2,000 every two weeks and 1,000 a week.
With 5 hours of overtime a week at 1.5×: 25 × 1.5 × 5 = 187.50 extra a week, making 61,750 a year.
A 60,000 salary at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is 60,000 ÷ 2,080 = 28.85 an hour.
Quick reference: 40 hours a week, 52 weeks
| Hourly | Weekly | Monthly | Yearly |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 | 600 | 2,600 | 31,200 |
| 20 | 800 | 3,466.67 | 41,600 |
| 25 | 1,000 | 4,333.33 | 52,000 |
| 30 | 1,200 | 5,200 | 62,400 |
| 40 | 1,600 | 6,933.33 | 83,200 |
| 50 | 2,000 | 8,666.67 | 104,000 |
A handy shortcut at 40 hours a week: double the hourly rate and add three zeros for a rough yearly figure (25 an hour ≈ 50,000 a year).
Frequently asked questions
Is this before or after tax?
Before. Income tax, social contributions and other deductions depend on where you live, so they aren't included. Your take-home pay will be lower.
How many working hours are in a year?
At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, 2,080 hours. That's the standard figure used to convert US salaries. In the UK, 37.5 hours a week is common, giving 1,950 hours.
Why is my monthly pay not weekly pay × 4?
A year has 52 weeks, which is about 4.33 weeks a month, not 4. Multiplying weekly pay by 4 undercounts your monthly pay by about 8%.
I'm self-employed. What rate should I charge?
Freelancers need a higher hourly rate than an employee on the same salary, to cover unpaid holidays, admin time, equipment and tax. Use the freelance hourly rate calculator for that.
