How to use the tip calculator
Enter the bill and pick a tip percentage, or type your own. Add how many people are sharing and the calculator splits the total. Under Tax and rounding you can tip on the amount before tax and round each person's share up to a whole amount, which makes paying in cash easier.
Tip formula
Tip = Bill × Tip % ÷ 100
Total = Bill + Tip
Each person = Total ÷ Number of people
Worked example
A bill of 84.50 with an 18% tip, split between 3 people:
Tip = 84.50 × 0.18 = 15.21. Total = 99.71. Each person pays 33.24. Rounded up, each pays 34, so the tip becomes 17.50 (about 20.7%).
Tipping customs around the world
| Country | Restaurants (typical) |
|---|---|
| United States | 15% to 20% at sit-down restaurants is standard |
| Canada | 15% to 20% |
| United Kingdom | 10% to 12.5%, often added to the bill as a service charge; check before tipping again |
| India | Often 5% to 10% if no service charge is on the bill; service charges are voluntary under consumer-protection guidelines |
| Australia and New Zealand | Not expected; around 10% for good service is appreciated |
| Singapore and the UAE | A service charge is usually included, so extra tipping is optional |
Customs vary by city and type of business. When in doubt, check the bill for a service charge first.

Frequently asked questions
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Either is common. Tipping on the amount before tax is slightly smaller. Enter the tax under Tax and rounding to do that.
How do I work out a 20% tip quickly?
Move the decimal point one place left to get 10%, then double it. On 84.50, 10% is 8.45, so 20% is 16.90.
