How to use the square footage calculator
- Rooms: enter the length and width of up to 6 rectangles. The calculator adds them up, so you can measure a whole flat or house room by room. Split L-shaped rooms into two rectangles.
- Circle and triangle: for round patios, bay areas and gables.
- Choose feet, inches, yards, metres or centimetres. Add extra for waste and a price per square foot or square metre to estimate cost.
Area formulas
Rectangle = Length × Width
Circle = π × (Diameter ÷ 2)²
Triangle = Base × Height ÷ 2
1 m² = 10.7639 ft² · 1 yd² = 9 ft² · 1 acre = 43,560 ft²
Measure feet and inches as decimal feet: 6 inches is 0.5 ft, 3 inches is 0.25 ft, and 9 inches is 0.75 ft.
Worked example
Two rooms: 12 × 10 ft = 120 ft² and 14.5 × 12 ft = 174 ft². Total = 294 ft². With 10% extra for waste, buy 323.4 ft² of flooring, which is 30.04 m².
Tips for measuring
- Measure wall to wall at floor level, and round up to the nearest inch or centimetre.
- Leave out fixed cabinets or islands if the flooring won't go under them.
- Flooring comes in boxes, so round up to whole boxes after adding waste.
